Totara (Podocarpus totara)
The mighty totara is a revered New Zealand native tree. Traditionally valued for its strong timber and cultural significance, it is slow growing and well suited to reforestation or restoration projects or in landscapes where longevity is prized. It produces small red fleshy fruit that attracts birds. It can grow to anywhere between 20-30m.
It is well suited to well drained soils but can also tolerate clay, loam and sandy soils.
Drought, wind and frost tolerant once established.
